Title: 42 sightings
Post by: Kilman on May 31, 2009, 04:35:26 PM
Have you ever run into a 42 that struck you as picturesque or a little odd?

No, I didn't edit this picture.  If I remember correctly, this was a tribute to Jackie Robinson.

Feel free to add to our collection of 42s.

I know I've had some sightings, but I can't remember any of them at the moment. I'll be sure to record future ones.

I was mowing the lawn. Riding mower. It has bucket things on the back which we use to collect the mown grass which we use as mulch. Anyway, one of the times I went to empty them, there was a tag in one of the buckets, perfectly visible atop the mown grass, which said 42 on it. It said other stuff, but the 42 was what caught your attention. I don't know what it was from.

42s always do seem to stick out.  It's a bit like seeing your birthday, that sticks out too.

This is my 42nd post!

You may have noticed the familiar strag designation for new members.  And now the familiar hitchhiker at the 42nd post.  The similarity ends there.  Higher levels will be at different numbers and have different names (to be kept secret until someone gets that far).

As expected, things are quiet in the post Towel Day months, which makes this a good time to plan on site improvements before the visitor totals pick up.  Now if I can only find the time to improve my web design skills...

Although this pic is not from the spot, I used to live right next to the 42nd Parallel in Wyoming.  I even celebrated the 2002 Towel Day there.

Breaking the rules here and it's only my second day. This isn't a sighting, but a question.
Does anybody know if the Coldplay song "42" was inspired by D.N.A.?

I’m afraid my musical tastes fossilized before Coldplay came out, so I have no answer to your question.

I found 42 in a banjo joke on this site: http://www.langston.com/Fun_People/1991/1991AAN.html

Here's the joke. (see 42 on the third line from the bottom)

(76.) Saint Peter, wanting the new arrivals to feel at home, promised to spend
some quality time with each one.  He asked his first arrival of the day,
"Hi!  What's your IQ?"  "150," he said.  "Great," said Peter, as he
showed the man in, "we should get together tomorrow and discuss the
theory of relativity for a while."  He asked the next person, "What's
your IQ?"  "120," she said.  "Fine, fine," said Peter, "I'd love to take
some time with you Wednesday to discuss current world politics."  To the
third person, he asked, "What's your IQ?"  "42," drawled the fellow.
"Fantastic!" cried Peter, "I've been looking for years for somebody who
could help me play a banjo duet!"

My novel has 42 fans on its facebook fanpage.

Great!  And I won't spoil it by being #43, not that you would mind, but I categorically refuse to participate in Facebook.  I could site reasons relating to privacy, big brother, accusations of evil doings, and whatnot; or you could simply conclude that I am old, un-hip, anti-social and anti-system.  Either one works.

I will, however, try to get to reading your book soon.

@Lewot- the number 19, eh? I wonder what that means. I wonder if there's a symbolic significance. But that's usually 3 or 13.

@Kilman- you old fogie!  ;) I resisted FB for a long time, then my oldest daughter moved out and it became the main way to find out about her life. Now that's how I keep in touch with my step daughters too. I don't text and they don't call, so this has worked just peachy-swell.

@VogonGirl - 42 does come up a lot in math. I think the mathbook people are big DNA fans.  ;D My twins and I notice it a lot.

Finally getting over the disappointment from last Sunday (reengaging socially and clearing out the spammers here).  So far, 42 hasn't been all that positive an omen for my sports teams.  But then who is to say the meaning of life the universe and everything is supposed to be positive.  Perhaps "God's last message to his creation" is more an indication of what one can expect from the meaning of life.

Speaking of 42, apparently there is a new book out on the subject:

Oh, Yeah! My friend send me this article about that book!  :D
....

We know that 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything, but how did Douglas Adams come up with it? In this excerpt from the book 42: Douglas Adams’ Amazingly Accurate Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything,  author Peter Gill teases us with some background on how Adam’s radio comedy series (and later, book) The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy came about.

As the book’s title suggests, Adams, like most authors, was not afraid to borrow, and there are revealing similarities between Welsh’s Hitch-hiker’s Guide to Europe and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. One of these provides perhaps the most intriguing explanation for “Why 42?”. As you may remember Adams had Deep Thought perform a little expectation management and say: “You’re really not going to like it” before revealing the Ultimate Answer.

Curiously, Hitch-hiker’s Guide to Europe had told of visitors to the UK searching for family roots finding “the answer a little disappointing” – after travelling around the world in search of “the solution to the most puzzling question of all”. A coincidence, perhaps . . . but this coincidence is on page 42.

Coincidence or not, knowing the origin of “42? takes nothing away from the genius of Adams’ work. Read more from the book at The Guardian.

Well recently I've been watching a TV series called Doctor Who, and I printed out the episode guide for it and noticed that episode 184 is called "42".  The episode has nothing to do with life the universe and everything though.  The episode is actually about the Doctor trying to save a ship being hurtled into the sun and he only has 42 minutes to do it.

The AP (Associated Press) just added 42 new guidelines for social media, including changing the spelling of e-mail to email. http://mashable.com/2010/06/02/ap-social-media-guidelines/ (http://mashable.com/2010/06/02/ap-social-media-guidelines/)
Ahhh, crap. I always spelled it e-mail. I don't want to give up the hyphen. It's comforting, for some reason.

In a fantasy soccer tournament, I am the 42nd seed.

Being considered the 42nd best isn't usually associated with a high probability of success, but maybe the 42 will bring luck.  If not, I will have my towel with me.  At least I will have options like hiding behind it, weeping into it, or throwing it into the ring.

I saw an ad on Comcast today and it read, "See all 42 state parks in Colorado"  I just thought it was cool.  I also watched a Phineas and Ferb episode today.  It was episode 4 and in that episode they make a racecar, and the number of the car is 42.  That's two things today.  Weird. :o

One of my online writer friends just published a book in which 42 plays an important part!

One Promise Too Many
Ebook Price: $2.99 USD. 93250 words. Fiction by Rick Bylina on July 28, 2011
For his first case, Detective Roger Stark has 42 hours to find a kidnapped child, but his adversary plays by a different set of rules and continually raises the stakes until someone has to pay the price.

Many years ago, we stayed in a literary themed hotel in Oregon during one stop on our honeymoon.  We stayed in the Mark Twain room.  I just looked up the place up to see if they added a Hitchhikers or DNA room since then, but unfortunately they have not.  That would be neat, and obviously it would have to be room #42.  I do see they have added a Rowling themed room.   http://www.sylviabeachhotel.com/ (http://www.sylviabeachhotel.com/)

Title: Re: 42 sightings
Post by: Kilman on August 02, 2011, 01:25:46 AM
When we picked our room I had a tough time choosing.  Tolkien lost out in part because the Twain room is a better room (though more expensive), but I must also admit that Twain probably edges out Tolkien on my top 10 authors list.  I don't remember if the Seuss room was one of the options at the time, but I don't think I would have considered it anyway.  My appreciation of Seuss grew a little later (after kids came along).

I'd have to take Tolkien. I'm afraid I couldn't resist even if it were the worst room in the place.  :) Then I'd sit and read "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil," "Farmer Giles of Ham," and "The Hobbit" all night.  ...Which explains why my family hasn't booked a stay at such a place. I drive them crazy enough as it is.  ::)
