Title: Towel day contests
Post by: Kilman on June 07, 2009, 02:22:26 PM
This year I noticed a couple of Towel Day contests.  Perhaps this is a something that will grow, but then again some of it may simply have been corporate sponsorship to promote the non-DNA 6th Hitchhiker book (In case you were not aware, Eoin Colfer is writing "And Another Thing" - which is "fully sanctioned by Douglas Adams' widow" - whatever).

If you happen to spot a Towel Day contest that may interest your fellow hitchhikers, please let us know.

Here is one that ends June 20th, 2009 with a prize of a special towel.  Unfortunately for some of us, it is only open to residents of the United Kingdom and Ireland.  Hey, does rebellious colony with former membership in the UK count?

This company (AfterDawn) is giving away towels in a drawing for anyone who posts a comment on the article thread (today).  A picture supposedly increases your chances.  Since they are in Finland, hard tell if they will ship one to America.

Since it looks like I am the only person to put up a picture, and since they wrote, "If you include an appropriately towel-themed picture of yourself, your chances to win will increase fortytwofold!" it would be hard to see me not winning a towel (unless they don't want to ship from Finland).  I wonder what the towel looks like?

One of these days I'll have to get my act together.  I would love to sponsor a contest like that.  I have a friend who does embroidery.  I'll have to see if she can make a special towel for next year!

...since no one is biting...

I won!   :D

Towel presumably coming from Finland.

Fantastic!  ;D  The translation I tried wasn't clear enough to indicate that.

Cool! :D  I just got a bunch of jibberish in other languages when I tried to translate it, so I would not have known that until it came (if it came).

The message is in Finnish, so you have to find the right species of babelfish.  The message I pasted in doesn't actually say if I won, hence the "no one is biting" because I left the question unanswered.  I had to follow a link to their web site to find out.

Yes, VogonGirl, I suppose there is still a big IF since it just might never come once the Finns figure out they have to ship to the USA.

Maybe it is being shipped by iceberg.

At this point I am not expecting it to come, but you never know.  It could be like one of those things you order after collecting UPCs off cereal boxes.  You send in your order and it takes so long that by the time the package arrives you have forgotten it entirely and are wondering what could be in the package.

Here is an exciting contest!

"The Literary Platform hosts an international competition inviting creatives to produce an animation that illustrates a rare and prophetic audio recording of Douglas Adams talking in 1993 about the Evolution of the Book."

Deadline for entries is April 15th (try not to confuse it with your tax return - The IRS consistently ranks in the top 10 most humorless organizations in the world - you will get no prize from them).

The winner will be announced on Towel Day this year.

Prize: "The winner of the competition will win an iPad2 loaded with Douglas Adams books and apps and a Don’t Panic towel to carry on Towel Day."

You should probably read all the rules, but here are a couple to note:

"Animations cannot contain violent imagery, nudity or evil content."  (hmmm, evil content?)

"Entrants can show their work wherever they like once the competition has ended but must ensure that the audio is always clearly credited: Audio by Douglas Adams, recorded by Voyager Books 1993"

Watch one of the two entries so far for an idea, or simply watch the one which has only the audio with a Don't Panic button to listen to the recording.

This looks fun!  :D

You never got your towel??? That's a bummer.  :-\

This contest sounds fun. I look forward to seeing who wins. Alas, I'm not animator.
No evil content. Hmm. That's a good rule.

Code 42 is giving away 84 "42" towels - today (Towel Day) only:

http://crashplan.com/blog/giveaways/towel-day-2012 (http://crashplan.com/blog/giveaways/towel-day-2012)

You have to facebook or twitter to enter

Post by: Kilman on May 25, 2012, 05:07:30 PM
I finally made a Twitter account, in part so I could enter the above contest.  I still refuse to use Facebook, so I will have to settle for a chance at 1 of 42 towels rather than 84.

Maybe if I win this one, they will actually send it.

I entered through Facebook.

I resisted Facebook for a long time. Then, when my oldest daughter moved out, I joined because that's how she communicated with everyone. I like it because I keep in contact with my step daughters, far away family members, and see what all my nieces and nephews are up to. That's where everyone puts there pictures in my family. There are some not so great things about FB too, of course.

There was another Twitter contest put up by Polly Adams (daughter of Douglas).  Seeing that it was limited to "today" only, and thinking she might be in the GMT time zone, I made a quick entry.  Seven minutes later she posted a 'Thanks to everyone, see you next year' message, so I didn't post the contest here.  I think she mentioned that the prize could be as thrilling as toe-nail clippings.

Not really a contest, but a quiz on Hitchhikers knowledge

http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/quiz/2012/may/25/towel-day-quiz-hitchhikers-guide?CMP=twt_gu (http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/quiz/2012/may/25/towel-day-quiz-hitchhikers-guide?CMP=twt_gu)

I got all 10 correct and it replied:

"You scored 10 out of a possible 10

You're not quite the full towel"

I have no idea what that is supposed to mean.

Post by: Teatime on May 25, 2012, 10:13:54 PM
I got 10 out of 10 too. So, I'm not a full towel either. Gee, seems like we should get to be full towels with tha score.

Good luck on that contest. I hope you win. Hmm, maybe they actually ARE toenail clippings. Douglas Adams' toenail clippings!  You could clone a whole army of them.  :-X

I got a score of 6/10. :(  Sad I don't know my HHGTTG stuff.  But I was also "not a full towel" So I suppose that's what everyone is.

7/10.  Not bad I suppose since I haven't read the books in several years.

I can't get the "not a full towel" phrase out of my head. Next time somebody says something crazy, I think I'll use it.

Child A: Will you buy me my own iPhone?
Me: Ha ha ha! Kid, you're not a full towel.
Child A: Um... I'll ask dad.

Speaking of that tweet, it was the one of two Grammar Girl related tweets I got on the same day.  The other was an interesting list of tricky Grammar issues.  http://www.writersdigest.com/whats-new/the-13-trickiest-grammar-hang-ups (http://www.writersdigest.com/whats-new/the-13-trickiest-grammar-hang-ups)  I particularly liked that idea that using they & their as singular pronouns is starting to become acceptable.

Here is a contest from the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall in England (The Hitchhiker's Live show will be there later this year, yea, still no US shows):

"Fan of HHGG? Does Towel Day mean anything to you? If it does, send a picture of you and your towel by Fri 24 May for your chance to win an official HHGG tshirt and don’t forget to book for the show when it comes to Nottingham Royal Concert Hall on Fri 15 Nov. Send your entries to towelday2013@gmail.com with TRCH in the subject line and remember, DON’T PANIC!"

Shirts can be seen here: http://www.hitchhikerslive-shop.com/products.php?cat=clothing (http://www.hitchhikerslive-shop.com/products.php?cat=clothing)

I didn't find anything to indicate that you had to live in England to win, but then we all know how my towel from Finland turned out.  >:(

The Hackney Empire, another venue in England that will host the live show, is also giving out HHGG shirts:

"In celebration, we would like to give you the chance to win a very special HHGG T-shirt. Just send a picture of yourself with your towel to towelday2013@gmail.com before May 25 and make sure you put 'Hackney Empire' in the subject line. Best photo wins - so BE CREATIVE!"

I noticed that the email address is the same as the Nottingham contest, but you put in a different subject line.  Not sure if this means there are two contests with more shirts to be won or just one contest.

There should be a fair number of Towel Day contests surfacing this weekend.  If you spot one, please let the rest of us know.  Here are two to get things started:

www.bagsoflove.co.uk/contest/3 (http://www.bagsoflove.co.uk/contest/3) - (got an email from them, so you may have as well if you entered last year) repeat from last year, design a towel and 5 entries will win a free towel

http://www.bohemia-apartments.com/2014-towel-day-photo-contest/ (http://www.bohemia-apartments.com/2014-towel-day-photo-contest/) - winner of the photo contest gets a free Prague apartment stay for 4 people.  Doesn't help me much since I won't be in Prague any time in the near (or likely far) future, but if you happen to be heading that way...

OK, here is one at a Slovakian web site.  Win one of five towels.  Unfortunately my Slovakian (is that a language?) is a little non-existant, and my online babelfish is less than clear.  Perhaps someone else can figure it out (translation below, for the original in Slovakian go to http://blog.martinus.sk/2014/05/towel-day (http://blog.martinus.sk/2014/05/towel-day)):

And these people on Twitter (@fabfurnishindia) want you to replace the word “dil” with “towel” in any song to win a towel set.

But I don't know any songs with the word dil (probably because I think it is Hindi or something).
