Title: Countdown to Towel Day 2010
Post by: Kilman on February 14, 2010, 08:04:22 PM
Its 100 days until Towel Day 2010 and I still haven't figured out what I am doing for Towel Day, other than carry a towel.  So I thought about how Towel Day is often quite fun when the towel is very much out place.  My favorite was when I had jury duty and served on a trial on Towel Day.  Hard to believe they selected a juror with a towel, but they did.  Anyway, I would like to count down the days until Towel Day with ideas for the most awkward places/events you can bring your towel to on Towel Day.  I'll put in one idea a day, others can too.  First post of the day gets to declare how many days until Towel Day.

100 Days Until Towel Day!!!

Awkward place to bring your towel:

The White House

I can just image trying to explain Towel Day to the Secret Service.

They let you have it on a jury? That's beyond priceless. :D

I dunno what I'm doing yet either, but I'll try to think of something.

Another awkward place to bring your towel:

church

Particularly during a service, like mass.  We did this last time Towel Day landed on a Sunday and there were plenty of judgmental stares.  Non-participating relatives didn't want to sit next to us.

What sort of music is California Gold Rush?

Somewhat off topic... When one my daughters wanted to do a blog as a homeschool English class project, she wanted to do one with a Catholic theme so I showed her your "Catholics Come Home" blog as an example.  She hasn't gotten started yet -class project gets an incomplete  :-\

It was good. It was a band called Ancestral Water. It was pretty Bluegrassy.
They sang songs about California history et al.

Too bad your daughter didn't do her blog. All of my older daughters seem to write in facebook size bites, so they don't blog either.  ::)  One of the 9 year olds is long winded. Maybe she'll be my writer.

Why not copy and paste the text here?  That way hitchhikers just passing through this site would be more likely to read it.  This suggestion has almost nothing to do with my being too lazy to create an account.

Well, if you insist. It read thus:

Happy Towel Day!

It's now about half an hour past 4:20 PM, and I'm out of classes for today, and I just finished a Spanish assignment. Well, not finished, per se, but it's something, unlike most of my work this term. But I'm in high spirits (for me, anyway) despite all the failing grades. Mostly because I already told my parents about it and they didn't get angry, so it looks like I can still get my punishment-free summer break, without which I would spiral into a college-failing . . . what do you call those pits made by those one kinds of ants? Well, some metaphor along those lines, anyway.

Towel Day's been fun so far--there are a couple of things that I sort of forgot about it. One is how hilarious it is that no one ever asks why I'm wearing a towel, and the other is just how good the book version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is. You see, recently I've been listening to the radio version (the original version, upon which the books were based) in the truck whenever I drive between college and home, so I was actually more familiar with that than the books, which was a change, because I read the books before discovering the radio show. The best comparison to make is to the first and second Paper Mario games--the second is mechanically better and was certainly not a disappointment, but it just didn't quite capture the magic of the original. But after hearing the radio episodes so many times and then going back to the book, I was able to more clearly see all of the changes he made, and the majority of them are improvements (the only ones that aren't improvements are some of the omissions, but other omissions are justified by the inherent differences between radio and prose).

Once again, I'll link to http://towelday.net/index.php (http://towelday.net/index.php) and http://www.towelday.org (http://www.towelday.org) in case the reader(s) of this blog want(s) to know more about the Hitchhiker's Guide and Towel Day. If, however, you are too lazy to click links (as I frequently am), I'll summarize:

. . . Okay, so, the actual story is far too complicated to summarize, but I'll summarize the bit about towels. A towel is the most useful thing that an interstellar hitchhiker can have. This is because it has great practical value--you can use it as a blanket, pillow, fan, shade, blindfold, sail, gas mask, weapon, etc.--as well as great psychological value--for, obviously, anyone who can hitchhike their way across the galaxy and still know where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

Lastly, I must admit that I probably will not have any Towel Day pictures this year, and even if I do, it will probably just be one, taken on my phone, which means it will be very bad quality, and anyway I don't know how to get them off the phone. But I do have some pictures posted on the towelday.net forum from previous years, if you want to see those. I apologize for not having any this year, but the failing college thing kind of gets in the way of that, and maybe I'll take some late ones once summer starts.

Edit: Oh, and the blog post was titled "Phreeeooow!"

Well worth the read, glad you brought it over for the convenience of casual readers (still has almost nothing to do with my being lazy).

I completely agree, I thought the books were the best version, and for pure entertainment value, I would probably vote the infocom game second, simply because it is so frustratingly fun.  For exposure bias reference, I read the books first (1981-as they were published), watched the BBC show second (early 80s), played the infocom game third (mid 80s), and did not hear the radio broadcast until 1990.  Last, but still of some entertainment value is the posthumous movie.  Reading the books first might bias me in that direction.  Also, I tend to like books more than movies, or other media.

Okay I think I need to read the books now. Yes it's true I have not yet read any of the HHGTG books. But this summer I will.

That first one has a interesting question which I'd never thought about before, and since we are getting farther and farther off topic, I decided to respond to it in this other new thread...
