Title: Design a Banner Contest
Post by: Kilman on February 17, 2010, 01:58:03 AM
At the moment, people seem about as aware of this site as a Bugblatter Beast is aware of someone hiding behind a towel, which is to say, no one knows we are here.  So, to remedy this, we want to create a banner that can be put up on other web sites, linking them back here for thrilling discussion, Towel Day planning, etc...

While I can't speak for our host, Donna, I can say that my artistic talent is woefully lacking.  That is where you come in.  You, or maybe someone who has stolen your identity, get a chance to design a banner for this site.  Here is how it works:

1) Design an eye catching (you will have to set them free after the contest) banner that will attract visitors to towelday.net

2) Post your graphic here for brutal and humiliating judgment by your peers

Its that simple

The Prize, rules, and other small print

The winner will receive a fully refurbished EGO compliments of Short Term Meaningless Success Inc. (approximate retail value $0.0000042)  Taxes are the sole responsibility of anyone foolish enough to pay them.  The creator and sponsors of this contest are not responsible for any loss of humility stemming from misuse of the prize.

You're really quite a good writer :P

I can occasionally draw video game sprites, but I tend not to be so good with basic artistic images. If I think of anything, though, I may and/or may not make and post it.

Here is something.

He has designed banners which he says are free to use.

Looks good to me!

Apparently this one is already linked to towelday.org.  It would probably be a good idea to put this somewhere on the front page to give people a link to that site and design a separate one leading to towelday.net.  I suspect it would be confusing if the same banner was used to link to two different sites.

It's been almost a month since the call went out for a banner, but no entries yet.  Never fear, I hear VogonGirl is in the process of designing one.

Towel Day is here and we never did get out a banner - hence the droves of visitors...   :'(

Never fear, the Design a Banner Contest is still open.  Act now and we will upgrade the previously announced prize to a SUPER-EGO!

Wonderful!  Hopefully our community will grow a bit more between now and next Towel Day.

Incidentally, here is why I am not fit to design the banner.  It is a little artwork I did several months ago entitled, "Self Portrait with Towel"

You can do better because I saw your D&D picture of your character.

Aaaaactually... Come to think of it, I know a guy who can draw. But he's already working on other some requests of mine, and I don't want to over-burden him. Maybe once he finishes what he's working on now, I'll see what he thinks of the idea.

It will have to wait since we will be off line for a couple days.  But don't let expectations get too high, it is only one level up from stick figure art.

I like it!  We can give a little time to see if there are any competitors, but for now, that looks like a winner.  Then on to the business of getting it out where people can see it.  Too bad there are only 24 hours in an Earth day, I need more.
Title: Re: Design a Banner Contest

Well maybe if you reasoned with time it might let you slide on a few more extra hours for one day, but that may not be so easy (trust me, I've tried it). ;)

Last call for entries!  If we get no other designs by Feb 22nd, VogonGirl's will win by default.  Then we need to get it in circulation.

Making things even more contesty... (My spell checker tried to deny the existence of that word, but I argued with it explaining that the spell checker could not deny the existence of contesty, nor could I defend it, if it did not already exist.)

Nice self portrait. Very lifelike.

My spell checker didn't enjoy "contesty" either, but there are so many words I type that it doesn't agree with that it has threatened to leave town and send me a bottle of White-Out.  :P

OK, time to pick a winner.  Let's have a vote.  All banners on the ballot can be found on page three of this Topic.

Vote for one:

A - VogonGirl's "new and improved banner"
B - Teatime's "make the contest more contesty" in orange
C - Kilman's "Self Portrait with Towel"

I also vote for A - VogonGirl's "new and improved banner"

Though that means "Self Portrait with Towel" will remain a neglected masterpiece.

One has to see the underpinning of truth accessible in "Self Portrait with Towel."  Elusively encased in the verisimilitude of this minimalist illusion of visible reality is the embodiment of the fundamental expression of self.  The conspicuous asymmetry of the face reflects the corresponding asymmetry of the self-image as imagined to be perceived by the other.  The simplicity of the body hints at a yearning for lost childhood.  Most importantly, the towel, held shield like, is an avant-garde expression of the desire for freedom from rigid social norms.  In this way, we see a truer self portrait than we might see with realism or a photograph.  ;)

I suppose we need a voting deadline - how about 1 week from when the voting started?  That would put it at March 1st.  Exit polls predict a victory for A, since our most active members have already voted.  In the meantime, I can try to figure out the code involved (unless someone else is handy with such things).

Testing, testing

Title: Re: Design a Banner Contest

Sort of.  The location doing the referring (web site displaying the banner) can either have the image onsite, or make a reference to it (img src).  Then you code it such that the image becomes a link to this site.  The reason I had wanted to post the image here, was that some sites might not want to store the image locally.  If we give an image source that might not be reliable over time (say if we store it at my ISP, then I change ISPs), then anyone who had that image source code might one day find one of those ugly red X things rather than a picture.

Here is the official winning image (note it was trimmed 6 pixels in order to fit into standard banner size 468x60):

It is (was) stored at http://home.comcast.net/~jckilman/TD/TDbanner1.jpg

So code at a web site to add the banner would look like this:

Code: [Select]
<a href="http://towelday.net" target="_blank">
<img src="http://home.comcast.net/~jckilman/TD/TDbanner1.jpg"
alt="Towel Day :: A tribute to Douglas Adams (1952-2001)"
width="468" height="60" border="1"></a>

And code for putting it in a forum signature would look like this:

Code: [Select]

If you had the image onsite, the image source would change to wherever you store it.  There may be other ways of doing this (I am no expert).  And maybe blogs (I don’t have one) do coding a little different.

If someone is storing the image onsite, there should be no issue.  And we can use the current location, then go back and change the img src when we have it on this site.  It might get a little tricky if it gets picked up and used at various sites that are not aware that one day they may need to change the source.

I’ve gone ahead and put it up on a web site I run for fantasy soccer, so you can see it as an example:

http://home.comcast.net/~jckilman/ (http://home.comcast.net/~jckilman/)

Also, I’ve made it my signature here, just to make sure the above signature code works.

This is probably one of those many ways to skin a cat things.  Some web site management tools, perhaps some blogs, etc... might make it easy to add banners by simply uploading the image and typing in the url for redirect.  Some might allow resizing of the picture to fit the space.

We might also want to consider adding a vertical design for banner spaces on the side of pages.

Then again, maybe I am complicating things unnecessarily.  It's what happens when I work on projects outside my normal comfort zone, like when I do plumbing or remodeling around the house.  It always takes way too long and never comes out right.

Sorry, that was definitely worded in a confusing way.

I will go ahead and prepare something (less confusing) that I think I can put in the news area on the front page (more experimentation).  It will have three options for the banner which I hope cover enough without creating confusion.

No, no. It's not you. It's just I'm not that familiar with the jargon. I felt like I do when my husband is talking about such things. I go all cross-eyed.
Title: Re: Design a Banner Contest

OK, finally got the authorization to upload images and put the banner onsite.  The "official" location is now...

http://towelday.net/Themes/default/images/TDbanner1.jpg (http://towelday.net/Themes/default/images/TDbanner1.jpg)

I adjusted the banner on the front page as well as the instructions for using the banner to reflect the current location.  If you posted banners that linked to my comcast page, rather than an image stored on your own site, you might want to change the url of the image.  (just change the address from http://home.comcast.net/~dakilman/TD/TDbanner1.jpg
 to http://towelday.net/Themes/default/images/TDbanner1.jpg)

No rush - the temporary location should be there for a long time.
