Title: Game Demo Thing

Yeeeaaah... Not much going on around here recently, and this has nothing to do with DNA, but it's a very poorly-constructed demo of a video game I started making a while ago. There's a different, much more complicated and story-heavy game I've been working on, but it hates me and refuses to function any longer, so I'm making this one in the meantime.

Press F1 for instructions. From there it tells you how to do everything else.

The demo contains two levels, and between the two, you should get to see almost every type of enemy I'm planning to use throughout the game. Therefore, the levels are kind of hard :P But, yeah, if you try to go to level 3, it gives you an error message.

Share and enjoy.

Help! I need to cheat already.  I am stuck in heaven, which doesn't sound too bad, but does not lead to much video game action.  I guess my lack of video game experience isn't helping much in figuring out what to do.  So far I can run back and forth and jump, but what does <B (or whatever it is) mean?

Oh, and thanks for sharing this with us!

BTW, I do get over that first pillar of cloud next to the angel saying "Jump! <B", but I can't seem to get past the U formation.

This is a really fun game!   ;D

BTW, I do get over that first pillar of cloud next to the angel saying "Jump! <B", but I can't seem to get past the U formation.

Actually, it's "<3", which is just supposed to look like a heart :P That angel gets a kick out of your jumping abilities, I guess.

To get over the U-shaped gap, you have to jump while dashing. To dash, hold X while you move. I believe the F1 instructions say something like "X (Hold) = Dash," but I guess I should phrase it less cryptically. I guess, though, that this is sort of designed for people with previous video game experience. Don't feel bad about asking questions though--it lets me know someone is actually playing it.

Oh, and thank you, VogonGirl. Anything in particular that you like, or just the whole package?

Wow. You made this game? Impressive!
I can't even get my novel to format properly for Smashwords epublishing. I need a brain upgrade. I'm not cut out for technical thingies.  :-\

Well, this is the first one where I've finally figured out how to implement accelerated movement. That makes it look a lot more impressive than my previous games. Also, since it doesn't really need a lot of story or dialogue, it'll be easy to finish. But I like games that have a good story to them.

Anyway, at least you finished a novel :P Been there, failed that. And it's not as if this game is finished either.

"Finished" is a flexible term.  I could have revised until the small furry critters came home, but eventually it's time to move on to other writing projects. Hopefully it's squared away. The tech guy at Smashwords gave me an idea. I tried it. Now we wait for their converter to diddle with it. I'll post a link. Just guess how many chapters it has!!!  ;D

I have another forty-two hidden in there too. Hmm, maybe I should work up a contest about that. Find the hidden forty-two and win something. Course I guess people could just do a search/find because it's an enovel after all.  :P

Well, I've updated it a little, but you probably won't be able to tell.

Oh I understand. Most of the fiddly bits that I've changed over the course of my novel probably wouldn't be noticed by most.

Yeah, like I said, these demo levels are hard because I wanted to cram everything in them. The real levels 1-1 and 1-2 will hopefully be rather easier.

Anyway, I made another useless update. I put an Instructions button on the title screen, and I added to some of the angels' comments.

Update wooooooooooooooooooo

New levels and stuff. Bunch of glitches fixed, but you won't notice that. The levels are pretty hard, but people at other forums always complain if things are too easy, so blame them. Oh, yeah, I added a little "dialogue" scene between Jumpy and Speedy, too. Oh, and there are bosses at the end of level 4. Levels 5 and 6 are empty rooms though. But 1 through 4 are pretty well-tested, so there shouldn't be too many glitches.

Share and enjoy!

Two more levels. They're kinda weird ones. :p

I downloaded it again, but I don't think I will be able to play anytime soon.  As my kids will tell you, I am really not allowed to play video games until Christmas break.  It is a self imposed restriction necessary for getting things done.  I have a tremendous knack for procrastination and certain things, like video games, are great procrastination enablers.  You see, I am well past the age when Julius Caesar observed that he was at the age when Alexander the Great had already conquered the known world - and I haven't even conquered a small village!

Should we using the same link as at the beginning of the thread?

Oh, yeah, I guess I wasn't clear on that. I updated the link in the first post--it's kind of easier that way, assuming multiple updates. I plan to keep working on it, but it does tend to take me a long time. But, yeah. If you click a link and it doesn't give you a file, then that means it isn't the most recent link, because all the old ones stop working when I make a new one.

Well, I understand if there's not a lot of interest in this, but it has been pretty significantly updated. The first two Worlds are pretty much complete, including one two-player level apiece. The two-player levels are rather harder than the other levels, though.
Title: Re: Game Demo Thing
Post by: Kilman on November 15, 2010, 02:49:38 AM
I am interested - just strapped for time.  I may try to defeat all levels available come Christmas break (rapidly approaching).

Incidentally, I get "This shared file or folder link has been removed" so I take it there is a new link?
Title: Re: Game Demo Thing
Post by: Grate Oracle Lewot on December 23, 2010, 08:27:12 AM
Yeah, I update the link often because I always forget to do things before each update, so it's not improbably that you'll click the link when I'm in the process of making a new one. Anyway, I think it should work right now, and most of World 3 is done-ish (I haven't made the bonus level yet, though).
Title: Re: Game Demo Thing
Post by: Kilman on December 26, 2010, 03:32:21 PM
That would explain it.  OK, I got the latest one now and will see how far I can get this week.  Just when you think you have some free time, flat tire, cable modem dies, plumbing backs up, etc...  Sometimes I feel like Dwayne Hoover in Breakfast of Champions (he starts thinking that he is the only person who has free will.  Everyone else is a robot and everything is made by the creator to see how Dwayne will react).

Hmm, well, since the last thing I said was that the first two worlds were complete, I should probably note that the third one is now complete as well. Of course, when I say complete, it's still subject to change, but at least there is something there.

Of course, when I say complete, it's still subject to change.

As a writer, I need that quote on a T-shirt.  ;D

Well, now world 4 is almost complete. The four main levels and two bosses are done, but I still have to make the two-player level, which will have a bonus boss battle in it. I'll finish that stuff some other time.
Title: Re: Game Demo Thing
Post by: Kilman on April 17, 2011, 07:11:10 PM
I downloaded the latest version, but I am still in the first world or level or whatever it is.
Title: Re: Game Demo Thing
Post by: Grate Oracle Lewot on April 17, 2011, 07:52:22 PM
Yeah, I might go ahead and open up all the levels next time I re-release, since I am calling it a demo. Then you wouldn't have to beat all the older stuff to see the new stuff. I suppose that makes more sense.

I should note that, if you load a saved game, none of the changes in the game will be there when you play it. That's because you're loading the game as it was before I updated. (Erm, so, well, if you play the new version, and then load that as a saved game, that'll work fine. But if the first thing you do upon getting a new version is load a saved game, that's what will be screwy.)

Post by: Grate Oracle Lewot on April 23, 2011, 07:44:18 PM
Alright, I opened up all the levels. Now you can see everything in its full horror with no prerequisites.

It goes up until the two-player level of world 4--this is supposed to end with a two-player boss battle, but I haven't programmed it yet, so it just cuts off. The actual level is there, though.

Edit: I think I finally finished the two-player bosses. It was a doozy, though, so tell me if you see any glitches.
Title: Re: Game Demo Thing
Post by: Grate Oracle Lewot on May 24, 2011, 08:53:49 PM
Well, I've now got it done up to level 5-4, meaning that the first four worlds are done, and World 5 is done except for the two-player level, which I haven't made yet. Again, I've left all the levels open so that you don't have to beat the earlier levels in order to see the later ones. It is supposed to be a demo, after all. I've also turned on the ability to breathe underwater (because level 5-3 is kinda underwater), which is normally what you win from the two-player boss battle in level 4-B, in the form of "Gill Pills." I should warn you, though, World 5 gets pretty sadistic, and 4-B is even worse than any of that.

With every update, I fix some old glitches and add some new ones, so, that much goes without saying, but I usually say it anyway.

Up through most of World 6 now. I haven't been this close to finishing something in at least five years.

Alright, I made the two-player level for World 6, and it's a doozy. Six worlds down, two point something to go.

What?  Not 42 levels?   ;)
Title: Re: Game Demo Thing
Post by: Grate Oracle Lewot on August 04, 2011, 03:39:04 AM
There will be 42 levels in the final version :P Eight worlds of five levels (forty) plus a bonus world that only has two levels.
Title: Re: Game Demo Thing
Post by: Grate Oracle Lewot on November 14, 2011, 05:14:24 AM
Uh, so, 7 worlds are done now. I guess. Well, plus one level, actually, so it's 36/42 levels done, if I mathed correctly. It gets incredibly hard, and for the sake of pattern I'll have to make the remainder even harder. So.

Incredibly hard, yikes!  And I remember it being tough just to get out of heaven at the beginning when I tried it.  Don't mind me though, I am the antithesis of the game market.

Well, the game is done now.

I realize that releasing it today means that you'll probably think I'm pulling an April Fool's joke, but come on--April Fool's Day 2012 has to be the coolest release date ever. I just had to.

Anyway, if you don't believe me, play it and see. (See, that way I get more people to play it :3 )

I get stuck during training.  I become the fireball guy, then touch a red circle thing and that's it.  The circle doesn't seem to do anything other than fall out of the top of the screen when released.  I get the impression that there should be an exit on the right side of the screen, but my way is blocked by a wall of cloud.

He does that. :P He's harder to control, but he's kind of better since he can attack monsters from underneath.

Title: Re: Game Demo Thing
Post by: Grate Oracle Lewot on December 23, 2012, 07:41:18 AM
What happened, you see, is that I had to test the game so much that I inevitably became too good at it for my own good. It's kind of hard to enjoy it now because I've been over every nook and cranny a million times. That said, I just played that level again today and I died a lot more in the battle. If Judy loses her fireball powers, she can't get them back without exiting and redoing the entire level, so Monster Mom becomes much harder then. (Well, mainly the orange arm, with the spikes on top.) Anyway, Super Speedy also helps :P The level is a whole lot harder without that. Judy can't go Super, though.
