Title: Douglas Adams in the news
Post by: Kilman on October 17, 2011, 08:56:47 PM
Here is a thread where we can post links to news articles that have some Douglas Adams connection (not to be confused with our "Towel Day in the news" thread which is more specifically about Towel Day).

As happens with great writers, Douglas Adams quotes are finding their way into every segment of society.  Here is a news article on global economics which opens with an Adams quote:

Oh interesting, thanks.  8)

I didn't see this. The article or your post. I used to be able to hit the button- "Unread posts since last visit" and all the new stuff would come up." That hasn't been working, I guess because there are things I've missed.

Good thing in my procrastination from NaNoWriMo I've been poking around here on my own.

Not entirely new material, but here is a little story of Adams' struggles to bring Hitchhikers to the big screen:

I like this part:
"I've appended a list of numbers you can reach me on. If you manage not to reach me, I shall know you're trying not to, very, very hard indeed."

Wasn't this in The Salmon of Doubt or something like that? I remember reading it before...

That's entirely possible, but I don't remember.

Nick Webb, the publisher who commissioned DNA to make The Hitchhiker's Guide into a novel passed away.

They mention DNA in this article about writer, Nicholas Eftimiades:
"With his comedic dystopian future history populated by hapless reluctant heroes and lovesick artificial intelligences, Nick takes a big step toward becoming the American Douglas Adams"

Sounds like he's worth checking out.
Man, I wouldn't want to be compared to Adams. People would hold the bar too high!  8)

I think his other title, "Enemy of the People" might be even tougher to live up to.

That one, I just may be able to handle. ;)  LOL

Simon Jones will star in a live performance of the Hitchhiker's Guide. Neil Gaiman and Billy Boyd will have cameos.  8)

Wow, I would really like to see that, but there's no chance. If some kind of video recording of it crops up somewhere, somebody point me to it.

Here's an interesting article where Simon Jones talks about "42" coincidences.

I suppose 42 is like Bigfoot: if you're looking for it, you see it everywhere. Either way, it would be nice to get to one of these shows, but I have about the same chance as being rescued by a spaceship in the crucial 30-second period, and unfortunately I have no Improbability Drive.

It looks like we have two threads talking about the live show (my fault for not remembering Teatime's earlier post)

Link to the show's web site: http://www.hitchhikerslive.com (http://www.hitchhikerslive.com)

Half way through the shows, and there are still no shows planned beyond the UK.

Ooo, yeah, I hope they film it.  :D

Well, sort of, but no, but there are audio recordings of some of the shows available for purchase, but you can't buy them...  To quote the show's web site - "Each live show is available to download. Downloads are available for 7 days after we add them to the shop.  For legal reasons, downloads are only available in the UK."

So in other words, the cost of the download for one of us is the regular price plus that of a round trip plane ticket :P And we have to convert into Pounds or whatnot.

Things are a little slow around here so…

It seems people like to quote Douglas Adams for news articles, regardless of the topic.

Here is one from yesterday about, “VARIES project proposes antimatter starship mission”
http://www.gizmag.com/antimatter-starship/23345/ (http://www.gizmag.com/antimatter-starship/23345/)

And another from earlier this month on fashion, "Space-age fashions are set to rocket"

As I said, regardless of the topic...

Here is an article from India about the two presidential nomination conventions which opens and closes with Douglas Adams.  (don't worry, regardless of your political leaning, you will not be too offended as they didn't seem to like either one)

Here are just a couple of related articles I found today (there were many more):

This is a good one that relates DNA's writings to parenting:

Neil Gaiman remembers:

Not at all an uncommon thing these days, Adams is prominently featured in articles about technology and science:

Dogs are still swallowing alien armadas from far across the galaxy:

...and the coming fad in Smart Watches is not unlike our silly fascination with digital watches back in the 70s:

My husband said we couldn't buy Jon Pertwee's (the 3rd Doctor) cloak, so I don't suppose we can buy D.N.A.'s guitars.

What?  He doesn't want cool guitars, possibly played on stage with Pink Floyd?  Or is this you turning the tables?

LOL. Naw. He'd rather watch a Pink Floyd concert on TV from the comfort of his own couch. Guess his wild days are over.  :)

io9 did a best to worst list of all Doctor Who episodes.  Douglas Adams' written episode City of Death (with Tom Baker) came in 3rd.  Not that I put much stock in these sort of lists.

http://io9.com/every-single-doctor-who-story-ranked-from-best-to-wors-1468104049 (http://io9.com/every-single-doctor-who-story-ranked-from-best-to-wors-1468104049)

In other not exactly Adams news, Monty Python will be doing some reunion shows next summer.  Sadly they will be in England.  Why is it good British humor shows (Hitchhiker's Live, Python) choose to perform in England leaving me out in the cold?  Bloody favoritism.
