Hmm, I'll give this a go as well.
I was first exposed to Douglas's work after he had already passed (or at least, I think so; I have a terrible memory for . . . um, everything): my cousin, Orphic Okapi, showed me The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide, and, well, you know how it is. Multiple reports of people literally falling off their chairs laughing the first time they read the book. So I bought myself a copy. Eventually I was also able to get my hands on the radio show, which I consider roughly equal to the books; part of me wants to say better, but I haven't reread the books in a long time now. I own the TV series, but, interestingly enough, haven't finished watching it yet; I have a tendency to not do things. I do own and have read both Dirk Gently books, Last Chance to See, and the Salmon of Doubt. I own the movie mostly because the towel they used looks exactly like mine.
The only major difference between me and Orphic Okapi is that he does things, which includes reading. He's read so many of the best books that I don't think the Guide had the same impact on him that it did on me. It changed the way I see comedy--hugely. Plus, although I still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea, I can relate in a lot of ways to Douglas's unique world view, even if I can't understand some of the more intelligent bits.
There's little else to say about me. I write things occasionally, but rarely finish them; the same goes for creating video games. Traditionally, Orphic Okapi and I have understood that he is better than writing and I'm better at game-making; he then points out that I've actually finished writing one or two things, but he's finished more than he'll admit, he just never showed them to me. Furthermore, back in the good old days, "game making" just meant writing down every minute detail of the idea for a video game; now that I have the cleverly named Game Maker program, I have to actually do a lot of work in order to make a game. The game I'm working on right now will, I dare to say it, be pretty decent if I do indeed finish it, but that won't be for many moons. I'm drawing everything, programming everything, and making the sound effects, but Orphic Okapi is writing the music, which I can't do and he can.
I have a tendency to make far longer posts and e-mails than I had originally intended.
I live in Oregon and flunked out of community college. I'll be going to a university in the fall.
